I am currently using a Enermax ELT620AWT which I bought 8 years ago. I had even written an article about back then.

It works fine, but I am about to order a new motehrboard/cpu/ram bundle and I am worried that the wear and tear it sustained during all those years might somehow damage the new components.

Currently my setup comprises a Q6600 (had to downgrade from a E8400 just to be able to play Dragon Age), a R7 260X GPU, 4 hard drives (one of which is a SSD) and 2 optical drives. The setup usually uses uses 130W which goes up to about 250W while playing games.

The new setup will comprise a Asrock Z97X Killer skt1150, Intel Core i7 4790k Devil's Canyon 4.0GHZ and I will keep the same GPU and remove the optical drives. I am not expecting to be using much more power than I am currently using, but I could be wrong.

What's the longest time you have ever been using the same PSU?

I think it heavily relies on the make of the model, I have a 5 year old xclio PSU (650 watts) thats still going strong on my secondary pc as I had to upgrade it (850watts) due to a more powerful vga. I think you should be fine tbh, its been going strong for 8 years!

If it were me, and had some money to spare, I would buy a newer power supply, GOLD rated.. Something like a Corsair RM650 which has more efficiency (saves something on your bill as time goes by), operates at lower temps, should be more silent and has more protective features..

What about this?

it is rated as bronze but appears to receive good reviews. my concern is that I will probably never use more than 25% of its potential and I read in more than one place that psu do not perform very well unless using more of their rated potential.

1. Your PSU is already BRONZE rated

2. ..which makes no 'sense' buying a bigger PSU since as you have rightfully said, using about 25% of its power is less efficient than using 40%.. 50% etc..

Thanks, P!ay*.

BTW, stay tuned since I am working on an update dedicated to people who are often upgrading their hardware.
